headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation. Their primary focus is the mental health and wellbeing of all young Australians and they know that getting help early is the key to resolving these problems quickly. headspace is making a difference where it's need most - with Australia's young people.

headspace Broome is focused on providing young people aged 12 - 25 with support and advice for a range of issues. They provide free services including Counselling, Doctor's Clinics and Vocational support.

About the Region

The Kimberley region is located in the northern part of Western Australia and covers about 421,000 square kilometres. The Kimberley has only three towns with a population of more than 2,000 (Broome, Derby and Kununurra), and the total population is around 37,000. In addition to the sealed Route 1 which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra. Access to much of the region is by dirt road, air or sea.

About the Opportunity

KAMS now has an opportunity for a Intake Worker to join their friendly, multidisciplinary team in Broome WA, on a full-time fixed term basis until 30th June 2021. Reporting to the headspace Broome Senior Manager, the purpose of the Intake Worker position is to effectively engage and coordinate care of young people referred to the service. As one of the first contact points for young people accessing the headspace Broome Centre the Intake Worker will need to build a positive rapport with a wide range of young people, as well as their family and friends. 

The Intake Worker will facilitate referrals and provide appropriate follow up to young people awaiting allocation to a Youth Mental Health Professional.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Relate to young people in a manner which is relevant and appropriate to developmental and cognitive level of functioning and provide services in a youth friendly and culturally secure manner
  • Assist young people seeking support and connect them to the appropriate services within headspace Broome or externally
  • Facilitate and monitor the integration and coordination of care to headspace Broome clients during the initial access period, including active participation in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary case review meetings.
  • Manage the weekly Intake Admin process and co-ordinate relevant actions amongst the MDT team.

The ideal candidate will be have a tertiary level qualification in mental health or community services or related discipline that provides a sound understanding and knowledge of working with young people with mental health challenges and exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a diverse range of people.
