Kimberley Renal Services (KRS) includes 4 Renal Health Centres based in Fitzroy Crossing, Broome, Kununurra, and Derby and a mobile prevention unit.

The incidence of Kidney Disease in the Kimberley is one of the highest in Australia. Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) and End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) incidence within the Aboriginal population of the Kimberley greatly exceeds the national burden of disease. Dialysis prevalence for this region has more than tripled in the last decade and is increasing at a much faster rate than in the rest of Western Australia (WA).

KRS and the regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) have developed a renal strategic plan to help combat this health crisis. This has enabled many patients to return to the Kimberley from Perth, which is 2,500kms away, to receive their treatment.

Living in the Kimberley Region

The Kimberley region is one of the oldest settled areas within Australia rich in culture and heritage, with first arrivals landing about 41,000 years ago. With some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the world, the Kimberley truly is a must-see destination. boasting stunning rivers and incredible national parks - you’ll never run out of places to explore.

Located in the northern part of Western Australia, The Kimberley has three towns - Broome, Derby and Kununurra - with a total population of approximately 37,000. In addition to the sealed Route 1 which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra. Access to much of the region is by dirt road, air or sea.

About the Opportunity

The Kimberley Renal Service has an opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to join their multidisciplinary team based in Fitzroy Crossing, WA. This role will be offered on a full-time basis.

Reporting to the Renal Services Manager, you will be responsible to ensure that professional standards, codes and behaviours that are legislated through Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and KRS policies are up-held. You will also be responsible for ensuring service provision is met by ensuring a holistic approach to renal health care provided to all patients.

Some of your key responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Provides high quality standards of patient care. This includes the assessment, planning implementation and evaluation of care in collaboration with multidisciplinary team;
  • Supporting staff in their day to day clinical practice assisting with assessment and problem solving as required;
  • Liaising with the local hospital regarding inpatient hemodialysis patients and dialysis sessions;
  • Contributing to the development and evaluation of clinical policies and procedures in line with accreditation requirements;
  • Ensuring continuity of care and a smooth seamless transfer of patients between RHC's, the local hospital, and the Perth Royal Hospital;
  • Oversee the orientation of all new staff to KAMS and the Renal Health Services; 
  • Completes staff rosters for each shift on the basis of accreditation requirements, workload prioritisation, and staff level of experience.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced Registered Nurse with demonstrated experience in the provision of Renal Health Care. You will also need to be eligible for national registration with AHPRA.

Your advanced renal clinical skills, knowledge, experience, and the ability to deliver clinical instruction/educational programs will be key to your success in this role. As will your commitment to the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.

Candidates must have well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work as an effective team member whilst acting as a role model You will also be able to effectively work across a range of services and service providers.

While not essential, previous experience working in the Aboriginal Community Control sector, a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, and/or Nephrology certification will be held in high regards.

Successful candidates must have a current “C" class driver’s licence, ability to travel by road and/or small planes as required, and willingness to undergo a National Police Check prior to employment with KRS.
