About the Organisation

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services LTD (KAMS) is a well-established regional Aboriginal community controlled health service, founded in 1986, which provides centralised advocacy and resource support for 6 independent member services, as well as providing direct clinical services in a further 6 remote Aboriginal communities across the region.

KAMS has successfully delivered high-quality, accessible comprehensive primary health care services over its 30 years of operation and has provided innovation and national leadership in areas such as health information management and evidence-based best practice in primary health care.

About the Region

The Kimberley region is located in the northern part of Western Australia and covers about 421,000 square kilometres. The Kimberley has only three towns with a population of more than 2,000 (Broome, Derby and Kununurra), and the total population is around 37,000. In addition to the sealed Route 1 which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra. Access to much of the region is by dirt road, air or sea.

About the Opportunity

KAMS now has an opportunity for Aboriginal Wellbeing Research Officer to join their friendly, interdisciplinary team in Broome WA, on a full-time fixed term basis until 2024.

The Aboriginal Wellbeing Research Officer will be a part of the KAMS research team and work closely with partner research teams from Curtin University and University of Western Australia on two projects looking at improving Aboriginal mental health and social and emotional wellbeing across the Kimberley. These projects are led by high profile Aboriginal researchers and support Aboriginal research methodologies working closely with Aboriginal community members across the Kimberley.

Some of the key responsibilities for the role will include:

  • Ensure leadership of the research undertaken in the Kimberley aligns with the stated Million Minds Mission project objectives;
  • Identify opportunities for research translation, impact and sustainability;
  • Manage planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Million Minds Mission Kimberley research as required;
  • Develop and maintain appropriate processes and procedures that support the work of the Million Minds Mission research teams as required

To be successful in this role, you need identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and to hold qualifications in Community Development, Population Health, Health Management or equivalent.

It is a requirement that successful candidates be willing to undergo a National Police Check prior to employment with KAMS. Successful candidates may also be required to obtain a Working With Children Screening clearance for Western Australia to be eligible for this role.

  • 5 weeks leave p.a.
