About Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Ltd (KAMS) is the peak regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Established in 1986, KAMS was formed to provide a unified voice for Aboriginal health and wellbeing, and to deliver centralised resources and collective advocacy in partnership with its Member Services. KAMS is governed by a Board of Directors made up of Aboriginal health leaders from across its Member Services.

Our vision is that all Kimberley Aboriginal people are empowered to be strong, healthy, and connected through Aboriginal community-controlled services. 
Our purpose is to deliver holistic health and wellbeing outcomes in partnership with Aboriginal-led organisations, centred around Aboriginal culture and knowledge.

Position Overview

We are currently looking for a 3 x  Health Promotion Officer, (1 x Beagle Bay, 1 x Bidyadanga, 1 x Kutjungka). This role plays a critical role in supporting Aboriginal clients and families affected by cancer across the Kimberley region. Based in Broome and or community, the role includes provision of services to multiple remote Kimberley Aboriginal communities. The role works collaboratively with the Cancer Care Team, including the Cancer Support Officer and Cancer Support Lead, as well as Remote Clinic Staff and external service providers.

The position provides cultural security, advocacy, practical support and health education, helping clients to navigate complex cancer care pathways and access care while ensuring the care provided is culturally safe, respectful and community driven.

Key Responsibilities

The Health Promotion Officer will be responsible for:

  • Providing culturally appropriate support and advocacy for Aboriginal clients with cancer and their families.
  • Assisting clients in understanding their cancer diagnoses and care options in a culturally respectful manner.
  • Facilitating appointment attendance and providing emotional and cultural support throughout the cancer care journey.
  • Engaging with health professionals to ensure culturally safe cancer care delivery.
  • Supporting community engagement and education initiatives about cancer screening and early detection.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings and contributing to service improvement initiatives.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal people, families, and communities.
  • Strong understanding of Kimberley cultural contexts and community networks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A current C Class Driver’s Licence and willingness to travel to remote communities.
  • Current National Police Clearance or willingness to obtain one.

Salary & Benefits

This position offers a base salary range of $66,259 - $86,044 (if you are an Aboriginal Health Worker/Practitioner), along with additional benefits including:

  • District Allowance: $2,920 (Single) or $5,840 (Double) per annum (pro rata) 
  • Electricity Allowance: $1,400 per annum (pro rata)
  • Annual Airfare Benefit: $1,285 per annum (available after 12 months of continuous service)
  • Salary Packaging: Access to generous salary packaging benefits of up to $30,000 per annum, allowing you to increase your take-home pay through tax-effective arrangements.
