 About Kimberley Renal Services

Kimberley Renal Services (KRS) includes 4 Renal Health Centres based in Fitzroy Crossing, Broome, Kununurra, and Derby and a mobile prevention unit.

The incidence of Kidney Disease in the Kimberley is one of the highest in Australia. Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) and End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) incidence within the Aboriginal population of the Kimberley greatly exceeds the national burden of disease. Dialysis prevalence for this region has more than tripled in the last decade and is increasing at a much faster rate than in the rest of Western Australia (WA).

KRS and the regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) have developed a renal strategic plan to help combat this health crisis. This has enabled many patients to return to the Kimberley from Perth, which is 2,500kms away, to receive their treatment.

Living in the Kimberley Region

The Kimberley region is one of the oldest settled areas within Australia rich in culture and heritage, with first arrivals landing about 41,000 years ago. With some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the world, the Kimberley truly is a must-see destination. boasting stunning rivers and incredible national parks - you’ll never run out of places to explore.

Located in the northern part of Western Australia, The Kimberley has three towns - Broome, Derby and Kununurra - with a total population of approximately 37,000. In addition to the sealed Route 1 which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra. Access to much of the region is by dirt road, air or sea.

About the Opportunity

Kimberley Renal Services now has an opportunity for a KRS  Nurse Practitioner to join their KRS team in Kununurra on a permanent full-time basis.

Reporting to the KRS Senior Medical Officer,  you will be working in a multidisciplinary framework within the Kimberley Renal Services Team, and with support from the Renal GP, KRS SMO and visiting nephrologist, contributes medical expertise to enhance regional efforts in the prevention, early detection and better management of chronic kidney disease, and to ensure optimum care for clients on renal replacement therapies within the Kimberley region

Some of your key responsibilities will include;

  • Contribute medical expertise to the ongoing planning and development of the Kimberley Renal Service
  • Support the ongoing development and refinement of clinical protocols for clients with kidney disease.
  • Contribute medical expertise to the pre-dialysis work-up by the KRS team for clients approaching end stage kidney disease
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies for education and training of primary health care providers, families and communities across the Kimberley, to enhance prevention, early detection and better management of kidney disease
  • Participate in the broader regional chronic disease effort, including education and health research, to further regional chronic disease knowledge and capacity

About You

The ideal candidate should be eigible for registration in the category of Registered Nurse with endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

In this fast-paced role, you must have the ability to function effectively in emergency and high-stress situations in a changing work environment, while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and work ethic. You will also have well-developed interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and organisational skills. Competency in the use of computer programs is required.

You will also be committed to the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control, acting in a culturally appropriate manner at all times.

Please note: To be eligible for this role, you will be required to hold a current ‘C’ Class Driver’s License. Your employment will also be subject to a National Police Clearance.
