Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time

About the Organisation:

Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Derby and surrounding communities. DAHS provide a wide range of innovative public health programs in addition to direct comprehensive primary health care services.

 

About the Position:

The Remote Area Nurse will provide service delivery to patient care and treatment of all clients attending the clinic in line with DAHS policies and procedures. You will be expected to operate with a high degree of independence in devising and implementing work plans and managing work priorities.

 

 

Responsibilities include:

The scope of this position will include, but is not limited to:

 

  • Provide professional, evidence based primary health care to individuals, families and the community utilising a holistic and culturally acceptable approach.
  • Utilise a holistic approach to assessing clients and families and supporting and developing patient understanding of their condition, treatment and prevention strategies
  • Practice according to DAHS endorsed guidelines (Kimberley Protocols, CARPA Standard Treatment Manual etc.), DAHS policies and procedures, and relevant legislation in order to meet health care outcomes.
  • Provide preventive focused health care, deliver health education and promote health awareness, including coordinate the activities within assigned health programs (e.g. Chronic Condition Program, Maternal and Child Health Program, Immunisation Program, School Health Program, Men’s Health Program, Women’s Health Program).
  • Provide direct clinical care and after hours clinical support where required
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation by utilising the MMEx Clinical Information System to actively manage individual clients care according to recalls, tasks and care plans, and include documentation of emergency care.
  • Plan and evaluate patient care in consultation with the multidisciplinary health care team and patients, families, community members using effective interpersonal communication to streamline an integrated patient journey across all providers.
  • Perform service delivery within personal ability, observing universal precautions and follow standing orders / guidelines in the absence of a Medical Officer
  • Conduct opportunistic screening and follow-up of patients as per MMEX Patient Information Recall System
  • Mentor and develop Aboriginal Health Worker Trainees and other students whilst undertaking clinical placements
  • Identify primary and acute care issues within community and liaise with Senior Management
  • Ensure maintenance and confidentiality information systems such as patient health records, computer systems, statistics and other records as required for the efficient, effective management of clients
  • Ensure following quality management practices in the provision of remote area health care services
  • Ensure cleanliness of clinic buildings
  • Ensure care of medical equipment
  • Ensure infection control for clients and staff
  • Maximise Medicare Billings through effective clinic and record processes
  • Manage a safe and healthy workplace environment

 

About You

To be considered for the position, you must meet and address the following criteria with your application:

 

Essential:

  • Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse, with a minimum 5 years post graduate experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of comprehensive primary health care, including emergency care.
  • Demonstrated good understanding of cultural safety and a commitment to the principles of Aboriginal community-controlled health services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and work as an effective member of a team.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication and report writing skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with aboriginal people.
  • Evidence of professional development to meet the competency requirement of a Remote Area Nurse.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement process, and legislation that governs nursing practice.
  • Current National Police Clearance
  • WA Working with Children check
  • First Aid Certificate (Basic Life Support)
  • Current C class WA manual driver’s license and able to travel by 4WD and light aircraft when required.
  • Previous experience in a remote setting
  • CRANA Remote Emergency Care Course
  • Maternity Emergency Care Course
  • Immunisation Certificate
  • Pharmotheraputics Certificate
  • 4WD Certificate

 

Desirable:

  • Fully Covid-19 vaccinated
  • Previous employment with an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

 

Special Requirements:

  • There will be regional travel required including off road and air travel in light aircraft.
  • Requirement to work outside of operating hours.
