headspace Broome is focused on providing young people aged 12 - 25 with support and advice for a range of issues. They provide free services including Counselling, Doctor's Clinics and Vocational support.

About the Region

Broome is located 2,240km north of Perth and has a permanent population of 14,436. Broome promotes a relaxed and easy-going lifestyle, with nearby shopping centres, Sunday markets as well as a broad range of restaurants and entertainment options. It is founded on the traditional lands of the Yaruwu people and is rich in history, culture and beautiful surrounds.

Broome has a deep history in the pearling industry, spanning back to the 1800’s, with memorials throughout the town to commemorate those lost in the early years of pearling. Cable Beach is also a must-see, being named in honour of the Java-to-Australia undersea telegraph cable that reaches shore there. You can explore its beautiful scenery with a bit of 4WDing at low tide, or you can even take a camel ride every day at sunset!

About the Opportunity

headspace now has an exciting opportunity for a Psychologist, Mental Health Nurse, Mental Health Occupational Therapist or a Social Worker to join their team as a Youth Mental Health Professional. This role is being offered on a full time fixed-term basis through to 30th June 2025 with possibility of extension. This role is based in Broome, WA.

Reporting to the headspace Broome Senior Manager, this role will be responsible for providing youth focused mental health services to young people aged 12 to 25 years who have been clinically diagnosed with a mental health disorder, or may be at risk of developing a mental health disorder and would benefit from the services offered through headspace Broome.


Your day-to-day responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Providing short-term, focused therapeutic interventions, psycho-education, support and advocacy to young people and their families;
  • Conducting screening of young people to identify individuals with mental health or drug and alcohol problems, or young people who may be at risk;
  • Providing supervision, support and consultation to the headspace clinical team and other service providers at headspace Broome;
  • Leading the clinical intake and reviewing processes of the service; and
  • Providing skills training to young people, including coping skills, life skills, anger management, problem-solving and conflict resolution.

What you need to succeed

To be considered for this position you will hold tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Nursing, Social Work and/or Occupational Therapy with proven experience delivering evidence-based interventions such as narrative therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy.


You will demonstrate a broad understanding of mental health issues as they relate to youth and have the ability to lead a multidisciplinary team, including the provision of clinical supervision, case load review and effective facilitation of clinical review. Importantly, you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in the ability to relate to, connect and engage with youth in the 12-25 years age bracket, in a culturally appropriate manner.

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • “C” Class drivers licence;
  • National Police Clearance, and;
  • Working with Children Check.

Attractive Salary Package ranging from $105,000 to $121,000 per annum.

This package range includes:

  • Base salary HPSS award between $77,771 and $89,553 depending on qualifications and experience
  • 10.5%  Superannuation
  • Annual leave loading of 17.5% paid on 4 weeks of annual leave
  • Remote area allowances including electricity, housing and district allowances
  • Annual flight entitlement paid as cash on completion of 12 months service
