Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services (KAMS) is a well-established regional Aboriginal community-controlled health service, founded in 1986, which provides centralised advocacy and resource support for 6 independent member services, as well as providing direct clinical services in a further 5 remote Aboriginal communities across the region and being the lead agency for headspace Broome, WA since 2008.

KAMS has successfully delivered high-quality, accessible comprehensive primary health care services over its 34 years of operation and has provided innovation and national leadership in areas such as health information management and evidence-based best practice in Aboriginal Health.

About the Opportunity

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services (KAMS) is looking for a full-time Medical Director based in Broome, Western Australia.

Reporting to the Board, this role is responsible for providing clinical, strategic, and technical leadership to KAMS and its member services, driving improvements in Aboriginal health policy, clinical governance, and primary health care service delivery across the Kimberley region.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing clinical, medico-legal, and strategic advice to the CEO and board on Aboriginal health policy and service delivery
  • Leading the clinical services area, providing expert guidance and oversight to key medical personnel
  • Developing and fostering strategic alliances to strengthen Aboriginal health policy and practice in the Kimberley
  • Driving continuous quality improvement and best practice clinical care across KAMS and member services
  • Overseeing the credentialing, compliance, and professional development of medical staff
  • Providing expert technical support and guidance to KAMS business units and clinical teams
  • Leading data monitoring initiatives to enhance health service planning and policy responses
  • Supporting funding submissions and grant applications to secure resources for KAMS and member ACCHS
  • Representing KAMS at regional and national meetings, conferences, and workshops to advocate for Aboriginal health needs
  • Providing direct clinical GP services as needed to maintain skills and support service gaps
  • Managing and mentoring senior medical staff within the Clinical Services division
  • Ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders on medical policy, service needs, and best practices

What you'll need to be successful

To qualify, you will need to be a registered Medical Practitioner and hold a Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and/or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM). While not essential, a minimum of senior-level experience in Aboriginal primary health care will be highly regarded. Additionally, you must have the ability to travel regularly by air and road and hold a current “C” class driver’s licence.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Expertise in Aboriginal primary health care
  • Experience working in Aboriginal communities as a senior member of a primary health care team
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues and community-controlled health services
  • Understanding of state and federal Aboriginal health policy structures
  • Relevant professional qualifications in Public Health (e.g., Master of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine)
